فکس ها  در حال محو شدن  هستند در حالی که FoIP توسعه می یابد.

امروزه اغلب پرونده های تجاری به صورت الکترونیکی (ایمیل ,به اشتراک گذاشتن بر روی سرور, FTP  و ...) منتقل می شوند.
با این وجود هم چنان از فکس در برخی از صنعت ها، امور مالی و یا امور مربوط به بهداشت و سلامت استفاده می کنند. علت این  که چرا بعضی هنوز از فکس استفاده می کنند هم چنان مورد ابهام است. یکی از مدیران تولید این محصول گفته است که فکس ها اغلب مورد درخواست HIPAA  ها، انتقال بیمه های سلامت و امور مالی و حسابداری هستند.
فکس هم چنان مورد استفاده باقی مانده است زیرا طبق قانون های وضع شده در دادگاهها،  نسخه ی دوم مدارک قضایی در صورتی مورد قبول است (کپی برابر اصل است )که توسط فکس ارسال شده باشد. اسناد الکترونیکی تنها در صورتی قابل قبول است که قابلیت اطمینان آن در دادگاه تایید شده باشد. از نظر من، این یک سرباره است که در مورد فایل های ایمیل شده به صورت pdf انجام می گیرد، در حالی  که TIFF ها تحت پروتکل T.30 فرستاده می شوند، آی ای فکس ها بی هیچ شرایطی قابل قبول هستند. از دیدگاه مهندسی این کار کاملا غیر معقول است . اما از دیدگاه یک شهروند عادی فقط اینگونه برداشت می شود که رویه ی کارهای قضایی مربوط به دادگاه ها به کندی انجام می گیرد.  به هر حال در حین این  که بازار فکس در حال سقوط است بازار فکس های ارسالی توسط IP ها به شدت در حال توسعه می باشد.
ماشین های فکسی که در مورد آن صحبت شد با تکیه بر مودم ها یی که برای پشتیبانی خطوط تلفن آنالوگ و  دیجیتال (از جمله T1/E1) طراحی شده اند، کار می کنند. این امر باعث زیانی همراه با از دست دادن برخی از بسته های ارسالی در موضوعاتی مرتبط با VoIP  و تکنولوژی بسته های ارسالی روی مدار می شود. با وجود اینکه متحد PBX به VoIP منتقل شده است ماشین های فکس هم چنان به خطوط آنالوگ احتیاج دارند . اضافه کردن سیم ها و خطوط SIP  می توانند یک راه حل جدید برای حل مشکل فکس ها باشد.
راه حل صنعتی آن T.38 می باشد. که یک پروتکل  هم برای عبور TIFF فایل ها وهم برای  سیگنالها ی T.30 بر روی لینک IP است. متاسفانه T.38  زمانی توسعه پیدا کرد که هنوز کسی به طور کامل تاثیر بسزای انتقال توسط آدرس های شبکه را درک نکرده بود.
روی شبکه تلفن،  فکس یک انتقال از یک نقطه به نقطه دیگر و یک شماره گیری مستقیم از یک شماره تلفن به شماره تلفن دیگر است. اما بر روی  اینترنت، ماشین های فکسی که توسط پروتکل T.38  پشتیبانی می شوند به دلیل کمبود آدرس های اینترنتی بلوکه می شوند.
جعبه های  NAT آدرس های انتقال را برای http و ایمیل  ها  اداره می کنند. ولی T.38  را نمی شناسند. در نتیجه بسیاری از تجارتخانه ها و موسسات از T.38  برای ارتباط با سرور اصلی فکس که اختصاص به دسترسی به T1/E1 ها  دارد، استفاده می کنند و هم چنین از یک آرایش مخصوص که پشتیبانT.38 است، بهره می برند.
متناوبا، کل مشکل متوجه سرویس ارائه دهنده ی ای فکس می باشد. هنگامی که شما فایل های pdf  را با یک سرور ای فکس مبادله می کنید، می تواند شامل  دریافت و فرستادن آنها توسط T.38  باشد، اگر یک سوال قانونی پیش بیاید سرور ارائه دهنده ی ای فکس  ملزم است که زمان و موضوع مطلب در حال ارسال و یا دریافت را تصدیق کند.

با توجه به اینکه  فکس ها در مقابل  خطوط VoIP  خیلی خوب کار نمی کنند، شتاب پذیرش VoIp در سرویس FoIP در حال افزایش است.مطمئنا این قضیه نمی تواند تا ابد ادامه پیدا کند، ولی هیچ استاندارد قابل مقایسه ای برای مدارک الکترونیکی، تا کنون به وجود نیامده است، در نتیجه فکس ها برای مدت طولانی باقی خواهند ماند.
